DIGITAL STILL CAMERA SHIPMENTS IN FREEFALL

As if we didn’t already know this, news just in is of global shipments of digital still cameras (DSCs) continuing to freefall.

Indeed, the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA), recorded an almost 25% fall in shipments of all DSCs from March 2018 to March 2019.

Breaking the numbers down, we see shipments of interchangeable lens DSCs continuing to suffer the most (negative 32% over the same period), while DSCs with built-in lenses (i.e. compact cameras) fell by almost 15%.

In terms of positives, only mirrorless DSCs seem to be growing and slowly at that.

CANON CREATES AN AIR BNB FOR PRO GEAR

Canon Australia has launched a camera-sharing community called Kyōyō (Japanese for “share”), so Canon owners can make money from their gear and allow people to access better equipment when they need it.

Kyōyō lets people hire cameras and lenses in their area affordably, as they need them. For providers, Kyōyō offers a simple listing process and allows them to set their own pricing.

Kyōyō has a built-in ID verification process, ballpark pricing suggestions make setting the right price easy and insurance is arranged by Canon at no cost to the provider, underwritten by IAG trading as ShareCover.

Kyōyō is also open to businesses like retail camera stores looking to list demonstration or rental products either as one off-rentals or try-before-you-buy opportunities for potential purchasers.
