With Echo products now on sale in New Zealand, Kiwi firms are coming out with localised "skills".

With the launch of Alexa-enabled products for Australia and New Zealand with the Alexa Voice Service (AVS), the next stage is for local retailers and other service providers to make use of this new channel.

Australian and New Zealand developers are already using the Alexa Skills Kit to create localised Alexa experiences for customers, including Sky Television, Air New Zealand, 1 News, Newstalk ZB and ZM.

For example, SKY TV is building a skill so Kiwis can ask Alexa questions to make it easy to find something to watch.

Air New Zealand has built a skill allowing its customers to check upcoming flight details with Alexa.

A new Flash Briefing skill from TVNZ’s 1 News brings localised twice daily updates to Alexa.

Is there an angle for a retail skill?

Developers can join the Alexa team at upcoming workshops, webinars, and other in-person events to learn about building Alexa skills.

Echo products are already in stock at Noel Leeming and JB Hi-Fi.
