ONLINE SPENDING GROWTH STILL OUTPACING BRICKS & MORTAR

By Wares June 29, 2016 Industry news

No surprise: BNZ and Marketview's regular tally of online spending shows double digit growth well above physical stores.

Total online purchases for May 2016 by Kiwis were +14% with online retail sales at domestic sites +15% on May last year.

Online purchases from offshore sites also saw double digit growth (+13%), although not quite as strong as in recent months (see above).

Computer products, Electrical goods, Clothing and Entertainment Media were responsible for three-quarters of the increase in online sales at offshore sites.

Moreover, among the various retail categories, Newspapers & Books is the only category where more is spent at offshore websites than Electrical, Electronic & Gas Appliance retailers.

Will the currency changes due to Brexit produce a blip in offshore online spending? It will be come weeks before any quantitative results are available...
